Utamaro Stain-Fighting Laundry Soap

Utamaro Stain-Fighting Laundry Soap

A Japanese laundry staple since 1957

Utamaro is a pre-treatment soap — you rub it directly onto a stain before washing, scrub gently by hand, then wash as usual. It handles the stains that regular detergent cannot: collar and cuff grime, mud on children's clothes, food, makeup, grass. The ones that are still there when you take something out of the dryer.

The bar has been made in essentially the same form since 1957, using recycled cooking oil from the food industry. It works reliably, costs very little, and lasts longer than its size suggests.

Why it is green

The green color has a practical purpose — it shows where the soap has been applied. As you scrub, it fades. When it has rinsed away completely, the job is done. A simple indicator that turns out to be genuinely useful in practice.

The formula

  • Plant-based — no surfactants or phosphates
  • Made from recycled cooking oil — sourced from the food industry
  • Gentle on fabrics — safe for delicates including Shirayuki Fukin
  • Deodorizing — removes odors alongside stains

How to use it

Wet the stained area. Rub the bar directly onto the stain. Scrub gently by hand — a toothbrush works well for set-in stains, with a cloth beneath the fabric for support. Wash as usual. For heavy stains, soak in lukewarm water after scrubbing and before washing.

Store in a dry spot away from standing water to prevent the bar from dissolving between uses.

How we use it

We use Utamaro to keep our Shirayuki Fukin clean and white. The plant-based formula is gentle enough for the fine fibers while effective on kitchen stains. A quick scrub before a regular wash and the cloth comes out fresh.
